澳大利亚皇家展览馆和围绕在其附近的卡尔顿园林，是为了1880年至1888年在墨尔本举办的盛大的国际性展览会而特别设计的。整个展馆和园林由木头、砖、钢和石板等材料组合而成，整体风格则融合了拜占庭式，甚至于意大利文艺复兴时候的各种元素。它的辉煌在于截止于1915年，有五十余场来自巴黎、纽约、维也纳、牙买加、智利等地的国际性的大型展览在此处举办。 　　Brief Des cription The Royal Exhibition Building and its surrounding Carlton Gardens were designed for the great international exhibitions of 1880 and 1888 in Melbourne. The building and grounds were designed by Joseph Reed. The building is constructed of brick and timber, steel and slate. It combines elements from the Byzantine, Romanesque, Lombardic and Italian Renaissance styles. The property is typical of the international exhibition movement which saw over 50 exhibitions staged between 1851 and 1915 in venues including Paris, New York, Vienna, Calcutta, Kingston (Jamaica) and Santiago (Chile). All shared a common theme and aims: to chart material and moral progress through displays of industry from all nations.
